The Adidas home kit in royal blue with Samsung sponsorship debuted competitively at the Barclays Asia Trophy in Hong Kong on 27 and 30 July 2011, where Chelsea wore this design with the tournament patch on the sleeves. Chelsea won the four-team tournament, beating hosts Kitchee 4–0 in the semi-final and Aston Villa 2–0 in the final at Hong Kong Stadium. The 2011/12 season became historic despite a sixth-place Premier League finish: under Roberto Di Matteo (from March 2012), the club lifted its first UEFA Champions League trophy after a penalty shoot-out victory over Bayern Munich in Munich, and completed a cup double by winning the FA Cup against Liverpool. John Terry, club captain wearing #26, featured in both Asia Trophy matches and led the defence through the Champions League run, though he was suspended for the final.
