It was worn only during the June 2009 tournament — Spain topped their group with wins over New Zealand (5–0) and Iraq (1–0), lost 0–2 to the USA in the semi-final, then defeated South Africa 3–2 in the third-place play-off. Xabi Alonso wore #14 throughout and scored the winning penalty in the 107th minute of the play-off against South Africa, securing Spain’s third-place finish.
