This Adidas-designed away kit was worn during a dramatic campaign that saw Newcastle reach the 1999 FA Cup final at Wembley, where they faced Manchester United on 22 May 1999 in the treble-chasing side's quest for glory. The season marked Alan Shearer's appointment as Newcastle captain, replacing Rob Lee, as he recovered from previous injury setbacks to score 14 goals in 30 Premier League appearances. Despite finishing 13th in the league under new manager Ruud Gullit who replaced Kenny Dalglish early in the campaign, Shearer's leadership and goalscoring prowess shone through, particularly in the FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur where he scored twice to help Newcastle reach their second consecutive final. The final ended in a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United, who went on to complete their historic treble. Shearer's #9 nameset on this away jersey represents a pivotal season where the legendary striker took on greater responsibility as club captain during a transitional period for the Magpies.
