Launched at Mong Kok Stadium on 24 August 2016 alongside Nike's new ten-year sponsorship deal with the HKFA running to 2025, the shirt carries Hong Kong's traditional red, split into two different shades across the front to mirror the red-and-white halves of the association crest, a nod to "One Country, Two Systems", with a white trim along the collar and "HONG KONG" lettering at the back of the neck. The kit debuted in a 4-2 friendly win over Cambodia at Mong Kok on 1 September 2016 and remained in use through the 2019 Asian Cup qualifying campaign. On 13 June 2017, Tan Chun-lok's first international goal put Hong Kong ahead of North Korea at Hong Kong Stadium before a 1-1 draw, and a 2-0 home win over Malaysia in October kept qualification hopes alive. However, Hong Kong finished third in Group B after losing the final qualifier 0-2 in Pyongyang, missing out on the 2019 Asian Cup finals.
