This is the jersey in which Lionel Messi began his permanent captaincy of the national team: newly appointed coach Alejandro Sabella handed him the armband in August 2011, and Messi led Argentina for the first time in a 1-0 friendly win over Venezuela in Kolkata on 2 September 2011, setting up Nicolás Otamendi’s winning goal. The shirt was also worn at the 2011 Copa America on home soil and during the 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign, which Argentina finished top of the CONMEBOL standings. In 2012, Messi scored 12 international goals as part of his record-breaking 91-goal calendar year, a Guinness World Record that still stands.
