The first season saw the Black Cats finish third with 90 points but heartbreakingly lose the playoff final 4-4 on penalties to Charlton Athletic. Redemption came in 1998/99 when Sunderland stormed to the Division One title with a then-record 105 points, losing just three matches all season. Kevin Phillips scored 52 league goals across both campaigns in this jersey, including 29 goals in 1997/98 that earned him Nationwide League Footballer of the Year. The striker formed a lethal partnership with Niall Quinn, with the promotion-clinching 5-2 victory at Bury in April 1999 sealing Sunderland's return to the Premier League.
