Produced by Umbro with Sharp as shirt sponsor, the design features a button-up collar, central club crest and Umbro logo with black outlines, and patterned sleeves with a subtle split club badge print. United wore this shirt across two seasons, clinching the 1996/97 Premier League title with 75 points, seven clear of the chasing pack, before finishing runners-up to Arsenal by a single point in 1997/98. It was also the final shirt of Eric Cantona’s career, as the Frenchman announced his shock retirement at the end of the 1996/97 campaign. Its most memorable moment came in December 1996, when Cantona scored his famous chip in a 5-0 win over Sunderland at Old Trafford, celebrating with a slow, collar-up turn to the crowd. Teddy Sheringham also made his United debut in this shirt after joining from Tottenham.
